Abu Dhabi-based EMKE Group, owner of Lulu Hypermarkets, has taken over the management of Al Wahda mall, the new mega shopping center coming up in the heart of Abu Dhabi. The site is adjacent to the renowned Al Wahda football club stadium and covers an area of 1.5 million ft². The agreement confirming the tieup was signed by Yousuf Ali, managing director of EMKE Group, and Rashid Al Zaabi, chairman of Al Wahda Club, the promoter of the shopping centre. The mall is expected to be ready by June 2006 and will have a 200,000 square foot (ft²) hypermarket as its anchor store. “We are indeed delighted to take over the management of this great project and I am sure that with full the support of the authorities we will be able to make this shopping mall one of the best in the region,” said EMKE Group’s Yousuf Ali. “Our shopping mall management team is already making strategies for the leasing and marketing of the project, which will no doubt be of international class.” Emke Group operates 46 shopping centres and hypermarkets under the brand name of Lulu, Al Falah Plaza and Emirates General Market. As of mid August, it was scheduled to open 12 more hypermarkets and malls across the Arabian Peninsula by the end of 2006.
